The local area

Trigonos is situated in Dyffryn Nantlle (the Nantlle Valley) in the Snowdonia National Park, halfway between the coast and Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and England.

Mountains and walks

An area of beauty and grandeur, the Nantlle Valley offers a range of walks for all levels of experience, from challenging mountain climbs to easier woodland or lakeside paths. The peace and beauty of the area are unsurpassed.

Coast

The closest beach to Trigonos is at Dinas Dinlle, just 8 miles away and there are countless other fine beaches along the beautiful Llyn peninsula.

Cycleways

Many visitors bring their own bikes to explore the area, or bikes can be hired locally at Beics Menai Bikes or Beddgelert Bikes for those interested in mountain biking or exploring forest trails. There is also a very popular cycle path to Caernarfon, Porthmadog, and beyond.

Narrow Gauge Railways

North Wales is the place for railway enthusiasts, with both the Welsh Highland Railway route running from Caernarfon, through Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert, and onto Porthmadog. From Porthmadog, the Ffestiniog Railway runs to the slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from Llanberis to the summit.

Castles

Nearby, Caernarfon Castle (10 miles away) is arguably the most impressive of Edward I’s fortified castles. Further fine examples can all be found within an hour’s drive at Conwy, Beaumaris, and Harlech. The only Welsh-built castle in the area is in Cricieth, an attractive seaside town.

History

The locality is rich in historical sites, ranging from Iron Age hill forts in Dinas Dinlle and Tre’r Ceiri to the standing stones at Penmaenmawr and burial chambers on Anglesey.

Myths

Snowdonia is the home of Arthurian legend and the Nantlle Valley is the site of one of the tales in the Mabinogi, recognized as one of the oldest collections of British Celtic myths.

Weather

Trigonos has long been interested in local weather patterns and has a small automatic weather station in the orchard. It records temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind direction, speed, and air pressure. This information is on the Trigonos weather website. There are also links to other useful weather websites

They are building an ongoing record of local weather patterns. Trigonos also uploads the data onto the web that will also give you today’s weather and forecast

The data is submitted to the Met Office where it can be viewed on their Weather Observations Website (WOW) along with hundreds of other small weather stations.

If you are going walking in the mountains, Trigonos strongly advises you check the Met Office mountain weather forecast for the Snowdonia National Park area as a whole.

You should also check the forecast for individual mountain peaks and ridges if you are going high.

Retreats are run annually in Tuscany Italy. The Alpe della Luna Nature Reserve is located in the heart of the Apennines, on the mountains that stretch across tranquil villages and forest-covered hills. Our retreats are set among the woods, flowers, waterfalls, and legends, in the heart of the Italian Mountains of Tuscany.

Each year we invite a small group to join us in the Apennines. We want to share with you the beauty of the Italian landscape, high mountains, big skies and clear, fresh air. The forest is full of wildlife, and you may be lucky to hear wolves and see wild boar. The lavender bushes are full of exotic butterflies and insects.

Our retreats are suitable for everyone. We invite beginners, those with health challenges, ages between 16 – 96, as well as experienced teachers and students. The sessions are mindfulness-based and include breathing and relaxation techniques.

Montagna is a medieval settlement on the old salt roads, where Francis of Assisi & other pilgrims walked its paths.

The village is dominated by the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which is one of the most important religious buildings in the Casentino Valley. The church has a beautiful Romanesque facade and a bell tower that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Other notable landmarks in Montagna include the 14th-century Oratory of San Rocco, the 16th-century Palazzo Pretorio, and the 18th-century Villa La Quiete.
